How To Make A Wedding Cake From Box Cake Mix
Box cake mix for a wedding ceremony cake?!?
Maybe I am a cake snob (which is weird crusade I don't eat much cakes in general). I went to talk to this lady about doing a nuptials cake and so see what sort of rates she charges. I take seen her work, it'south ever overnice, and she does all cakes for my FIL. When I was talking to her she smiled and said I just had to pick a flavor out of the box cake island in the grocery store..... I am in atheism.
Am I wrong to assume that the wedding ceremony cake should exist made from scratch? I don't know what flavor I desire necessarily just was interested in a tasting. This is my wedding cake - I don't want something that I can make at home.
My father simply smiles and smirks and says I can give out fruitcake like my mom tried to tell him was the Canadian mode to practise a wedding cake when they got married. Ummm no fruitcake for me thank yous....

If you're paying $$$ for the block so Aye it should be homemade. That's ridiculous! I would've laughed at her.......
Don't get me wrong, I like box cake mix in a compression, but I too can exist a dessert snob (my aunt is Betty-freaking Martha Crocktart) and I tin can tell when something is box and scratch.

And I would've hysterically laughed at her likewise! Call me a cake snob. For all that you could brand information technology yourself for the $nine.43 it would toll you to buy all the ingredients at the store. Please shop effectually and observe someone to actually broil you your wedding cake.

Wow, I think I would have laughed in her face. You tin can make a box cake mix from domicile, then why pay her ... oh look, because she'due south a professional person! I've never heard of a bakery using boxed cake mix.

I agree with you. I don't like box block at all. I make my cakes from scratch so at that place is NO way a box block is going to be my wedding cake.

I think it really just depends on how much she'due south charging you for starters, and too the finished product. Did she permit you have a tasting?
IMO - if she does employ cake mix from the shop and maybe adds her ain ingredients or jazzes it up in some manner to go far taste fabulous, then it doesn't really matter.
I don't recollect any of your guests will be able to identify Betty Crocker White Block mix when they bite into information technology.... so for the right price, why not?

If you wanted a box cake mix, I am pretty sure you would of had someone else to do it. I wouldn't pay for that.

I made pineapple upside-down cupcakes for FH'southward altogether one twelvemonth. I was having trouble with the scratch recipe translating into the cupcake size b/c it was likewise sugary and caramelizing way too much in the oven. I went to Whole Foods and talked to their pastry chef to ask for advice. She was like......."Why would you bake that from scratch? A lot of commercial bakeries use mixes likewise. Nosotros just buy it commercially and and then add actress rum/vanilla/cocoa/liqeur/whatever according to our recipe for each item. Why reinvent the bicycle? The 'seasoning' is the hard function. Save your efforts for that."
I was like O.o.O.
When I make vanilla cupcakes at present, I use box mix and I add together actress vanilla and almond extract. Seriously - nobody knows.

Wow... is this lady a professional bakery? If so then I would seriously re-consider the type of business organisation she is running.
If the adult female is doing it every bit a side job and then I can empathize the demand to use a box cake.
However, this is your wedding twenty-four hour period and the cake should reflect whatever kind of elegance you are trying to bring along. I would schedule a tasting with a few other bakeries and get a feel for what kind of cake you like. If you end up non liking one of the other bakeries then you can ever use this lady every bit a back up programme.

I think a lot of bakers are using box mixes. At a bridal evidence last calendar month my mom and I both commented several times that the samples tasted just like box mixes. It's sorry but I think they are charging us for the decor and time it have to decorate them.

You lot would exist surprised what bakeries utilise. Non saying that they go to Walmart and purchase boxed cake mix but baker suppliers exercise sell packaged mixes. I know this from experience. It's not like the grocery store kind but it'southward already premixed. When you purchase a cake, you lot are mostly paying for the decor and time put into the decor like Mek said.

I detect this thread amusing because I was in the same boat when I first started my planning. My mom suggested a girl that I went to high school who got into making special consequence and wedding cakes. This girl uses box block mix (like the stuff you get off the shelf at Walmart) and just decorates it. Her cakes are okay looking, but I was concerned about gustation. My mom thought I was beingness a snob until she ordered one for my grandparents' 50th anniversary political party. It was terrible. My grandma fifty-fifty said that she was glad I went with a existent baker for my wedding cake.

I'1000 so glad I'yard not the but cake snob! LOL. I was trying to find the most reasonable price since an aunt is paying for the cake, but I call up I will endeavour to observe someone middle grounds, that is not expensive per say, just that the quality will exist something I'thousand not ashamed of.
I went to 1 wedding last year and y'all could tell from across the room the levels were uneven and not stacked correctly. I would cry if that was me...

I bet you lot can totally tell when it's something really sweetness - a lot of boxed cake mixes accept this really sugary spongy taste, whereas homemade cakes tend to be a picayune more than balanced out. Like my mom's chocolate sour cream cake. OMFG.
Speaking of cake, everyone accept a good red velvet scratch recipe?

I Dearest baking and I love blistering from scratch!! I'm not opposed to box cake either though.. For my "specialty cakes" I've made, I accept used box cake and they come up out just fine and delicious even! That's usually because I'm too lazy to go become all the ingredients and make a whole cake from scratch AND do the special decorations... and information technology depends on the flavor.
Some cakes you simply need to do from scratch though.. like v spice carrot cake... yummmmmmmm...
Now that I know most bakeries utilize boxed cake though.. kinda am more inclined to make mine later all haha

My aunt has been doing specialty cakes for years. She uses box mixes. The secret is in her homemade frosting and decor.

Interesting thread. I'm actually a huge food snob, just I grew upwards on the 3/$1 packs of mystery meat hot dogs at the inexpensive grocery shop and so my parents think its pretty funny what I won't eat at present (shrug). I generally won't touch anything fabricated with artifical sweetners, I prefer my meat to have a subcontract name on the label non a brand name, and I eat 90% organic. Withal with cakes, well information technology's interesting, I brand my own cakes from scratch at home, most of the time. Once in a while theres a fail and I need the cake mix for a autumn back program (although the one in my cupboard says expired 10/Ten/ 2010, so it'due south been a while). But I really really dislike bakery cake I think its gross, it'due south too sweet I simply don't like it. The actually fancy identify in our area makes gorgeous cakes, simply they taste terrible. The grocery store is okay... merely still if given the choice I'd take Betty Crocker.
I say if the toll is right and the design work is great, go for information technology.
